Advancing Seahorse Conservation in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is home to at least five known seahorse species, yet much remains to be learned about their habitats, the pressures they face, and how best to conserve them. To help address these knowledge gaps, PhD student Samara Polwatta recently led Sri Lanka’s first-ever workshop on seahorse conservation, bringing together stakeholders from government agencies, NGOs, academia, and diving clubs. Participants shared insights on seahorse distribution, threats, and management efforts, providing a foundation for more informed and effective conservation initiatives.
The workshop also introduced iSeahorse, our global citizen science platform, encouraging participants to contribute their observations and help build a strong network of seahorse advocates in Sri Lanka.
Special thanks to all the attendees, including Sub Aqua Club, for contributing their knowledge and enthusiasm to this milestone event.
This workshop represents an important step toward strengthening collective expertise and advancing the conservation of these remarkable marine species.
