All eyes on a healthy ocean this #WorldOceanDay

All eyes on a healthy ocean this #WorldOceanDay, and that means looking beneath the waves.

Seahorses depend on habitats like seagrass, corals, and sponges, where they cling with their tails and shelter from predators. But these same habitats can be damaged by bottom trawling, a destructive fishing practice that drags heavy nets scraping the seafloor.

Our latest bottom trawling paper, picked up by the New York Times today, reveals the scale of this destructive fishing practice. From seahorses to sharks, more than 3,000 fish species have been recorded in bottom trawl catches, and our researchers estimate the true number could be nearly double.

This World Ocean Day, we’re calling for greater attention to what bottom trawling catches, what it damages, and what must be protected.
