Hippocampus capensis – the latest iSeahorse VIP-horse

The latest iSeahorse VIP-horse is Hippocampus capensis, also known as the Knysna seahorse, an Endangered species hailing from just a few South African river mouths. Thanks to our colleague Louw Claassens, the director of the Knysna Basin Project and iSeahorse National Seahorse Expert, for this spectacular shot and submitting it to iSeahorse. A herd of Endangered White’s seahorses

This month we’re highlighting a whole herd of White’s seahorses (Hippocampus whitei), thanks to scale-blazing scuba diver Tony Strazzari! Despite only joining iSeahorse on May 18th, Strazzari has posted over 140 seahorse observations under the username of tonydiver, backdated all the way to 2014. He is now in third place (and encroaching on second) for the most observations posted to iSeahorse, solely surpassed by Guylian Seahorses of the World and Projects Abroad Cambodia. A seahorse as prey – featured iSeahorse observation

After the seahorse …

This May I had the wonderful opportunity to work with my director, Dr Amanda Vincent, while she was in Southern France on sabbatical and one of the first things we did was dive for seahorses.… Read more

Women Fish

By Danika Kleiber (Originally posted on IUCN Save our Species) Historically, the role of gender in marine fisheries has not been evaluated in terms of conservation implications. But that is changing. As part of her PhD thesis Dr Danika Kleiber worked with Professor Amanda Vincent, Director of Project Seahorse and Chair of the IUCN Species …

An itty-bitty “sea foal”

For April we’re showcasing an itty-bitty “sea-foal,” submitted by iSeahorse user Shane Gross. He happened upon this bobble-headed cutie in the Bahamas. It looks like it might be a baby slender seahorse (Hippocampus reidi), but it’s hard to say for sure at this age. While the fry of different seahorses are often difficult to tell …
