Our bottom trawl research takes the stage at the FishBase and SeaLifeBase Symposium

Earlier this week at the FishBase and SeaLifeBase Symposium, our program leader, Dr. Sarah Foster presented our research on the thousands of fish species caught by bottom trawl fisheries worldwide.

Drawing on more than 9,000 records spanning over a century, our study found that more than 3,000 species have been caught in bottom trawls – including many threatened with extinction. And the true number could be nearly twice as high.

Our research also highlights how FishBase can be a valuable tool for understanding the impacts of fisheries and finding ways to reconcile fisheries and conservation.

The findings highlight the need to rethink how bottom-trawl catches are documented, assessed, and managed.
