Project Seahorse research on bottom trawling highlighted by The New York Times on World Ocean Day

A major #WorldOceanDay moment for our research! Today, The New York Times draws on our recent research, The global diversity of marine fishes caught in bottom trawl fisheries, to argue why it is time to rethink this widespread and problematic fishing practice.

Our research revealed that bottom trawls have caught more than 3,000 fish species worldwide – from seahorses to sharks –  including many species at risk of extinction. The true number may be nearly double.

The editorial brings this evidence into a major public conversation about how seafood is caught, what ocean life is lost in the process, and why better alternatives are urgently needed.
