#ThrowbackThursday – Marine reserves drive both taxonomic and functional change in coral reef invertebrate communities

Research from the Philippines shows marine reserves are changing coral reef ecosystems in important ways – and not just by increasing the number of species.

This week’s #ThrowbackThursday study highlights that healthy reefs see an increase in not only biodiversity, but also ecological functions that keep these marine ecosystems resilient. By supporting filter-feeding and coral-associated invertebrates, protected reefs help to improve water filtration, nutrient cycling, and more.
