Progress on updating IUCN Red List Assessments for Seahorses and Their Relatives at SyngCo

 

Elsa Camins, our Research Biologist and Red List Authority Coordinator for the IUCN Seahorse, Pipefish and Seadragon Specialist Group, ran an IUCN Red List assessment workshop at the SyngCo Conference in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Feb 19th – 20th, 2026.

During the workshop, she shared how IUCN Red List assessments are conducted – the global process used to evaluate how close a species is to extinction and determine its conservation status. She also presented progress toward assessing all Syngnathidae species and facilitated a collaborative review of four species assessments with colleagues.

The workshop created valuable space for knowledge exchange and marked another important step toward strengthening global conservation status assessments for these iconic fishes. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and contributed their expertise!
