A Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos)-led international team has discovered a new species of thorny seahorse. The study, published in the science journal Zootaxa, reveals that the thorny seahorse (Hippocampus histrix), long believed to be a single species ranging from East Africa to the western Pacific, is a complex of three distinct species. To help build Sri Lanka’s first national assessment of seahorses, last year our PhD candidate and researcher Samara Polwatta led a multi-sector workshop on seahorse conservation, bringing together 20 stakeholders from government agencies, NGOs, academia, and diving clubs.
